Protection for Vulnerable Children and Women from Sudan
In April 2023, a conflict that had been simmering for some time escalated in Sudan. Since then, the country has been experiencing the world's largest displacement crisis: millions of people have been forced to leave their homes in search of safety. Recurring droughts are exacerbating an already precarious situation, with more than half of the population suffering from acute food shortages.
Since the beginning of the conflict, numerous people have fled to South Sudan in search of safety and access to essential services. Particularly alarming is the high number of vulnerable individuals, including unaccompanied children, elderly people, persons with disabilities, and pregnant women. Many women face violence and exploitation while fleeing.
The project provides comprehensive protection and support services for women and children, including counselling, psychosocial support, family tracing and reunification, and the establishment of child-friendly spaces with play facilities. In addition, particularly vulnerable women and children receive essential supplies to meet their basic needs.
Project Goals
The project pursues two key objectives: firstly, to improve the psychosocial well-being of children and women in the Gorom refugee camp and the surrounding city of Juba. Secondly, it seeks to raise awareness among women and girls in the camp and beyond about their rights and where they can access support.
Project Grant
The Stanley Thomas Johnson Foundation is supporting this Caritas Switzerland project with a contribution of 300,000 CHF for the period from January 2025 to June 2026.
